Connecting Rod

The automotive engine connecting rod is a core transmission load-bearing component that connects the piston and the crankshaft. It withstands high-frequency reciprocating tensile and compressive loads as well as alternating impact loads, directly determining engine power performance, NVH characteristics, and overall service life. Currently, connecting rods for mainstream passenger vehicles and hybrid engines are predominantly made of forged steels such as C70S6, 40Cr, and 42CrMo. These materials present machining challenges including uneven rigidity distribution, easy deformation at thin-wall sections, and high dimensional accuracy requirements. The connecting rod has an elongated, irregular structure with relatively thin shank walls and a large bore diameter difference between the big end and small end, resulting in poor workpiece rigidity. During cutting, the workpiece is highly prone to deformation caused by the combined effects of cutting forces, clamping forces, and thermal stresses. At the same time, the part has stringent requirements for multi-dimensional dimensions and geometric tolerances, making machining highly challenging. Ahno has extensive proven expertise and practical case experience in connecting rod machining, capable of handling the bolt support face, bolt hole, back counterbore of the threaded hole, partial fracture-split mating surface milling, as well as rough and finish milling of both end faces of the big and small ends.

Case Details

Process:

1. Rough milling of both end faces of the big and small ends: Ahno Loong Series M2390-XO16

2. Spot facing and milling of the bolt support face

3. Bolt hole counterboring and hole opening chamfering

4. Thread pilot hole drilling and form chamfering

Ahno Loong Series Multi-Functional Shoulder Milling M2390-XO16:

The Ahno Loong Series Multi-Functional Shoulder Milling M2390-XO16 completes the overall rough milling of both end faces of the connecting rod's big and small ends. This series features high insert rigidity and excellent impact resistance, enabling stable performance under high-strength cutting loads during rough machining. It efficiently removes blank allowance and quickly levels the end face datums of the big and small ends, establishing a precise datum foundation for subsequent hole machining and precision milling.

Special Milling:

Ahno's special milling combines plunge and milling in a single pass for one-step forming. Addressing the stringent flatness and perpendicularity requirements of the connecting rod bolt support face, the special tool is tailored to the workpiece's formed dimensions, enabling precision spot-facing of the support face in a single operation. This effectively resolves common issues associated with conventional general-purpose tools, such as surface unevenness, burrs, and out-of-tolerance perpendicularity.

Special Form Step Drill:

Ahno's special form step drill integrates bolt hole counterbore forming and hole opening chamfering in a single operation - one tool, three functions. No second tool change is required, significantly shortening the process cycle and reducing clamping errors.

Special Thread Pilot Hole Drill and Reaming Drill:

Ahno's special dedicated thread pilot hole drill completes precision drilling of the connecting rod thread pilot hole and form chamfering of the threaded end in a single operation. The special reaming drill performs counterboring on the back side of the threaded hole and spot-facing on the back inclined surface, where the tool overhang is long and machining is highly challenging. The tool design features a long guide post and a three-flute structure to ensure machining accuracy and prevent thread burrs and rollover.
